Rage Against The Machine – XX (20th Anniversary Editions) November 26th
Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Rage Against the Machine – XX, commemorative 20th anniversary editions of the eponymous debut album by a great American rock band, on November 26th, 2012.
Originally released in November 1992, Rage Against the Machine signalled the arrival of a revolutionary musical force, a band straddling the worlds of hip-hop and heavy metal with a scorching streetwise sound that rapped and rhymed hardcore across a musical backdrop as menacing and inspirational as graffiti. Rage Against the Machine entered the popular lexicon as more than just a revolutionary American rock band, the group’s very name provided a rallying battle cry for the ongoing struggles for liberation–psychic and political–on planet earth.
Formed in 1991, Rage Against the Machine opened the gates of a new boundary-obliterating rock-rap musical alliance with the band’s literate and politically-charged debut album. Driven by Tom Morello’s unmistakeable guitar wallop and vocalist Zack De La Rocha’s salient bulletins from the front, Rage Against the Machine became a critical and commercial success, selling millions of copies around the world while attaining legendary status among alt-rock fans. To this day the album, and the band, remain standard-bearers for uncompromising incendiary rock.
Newly remastered for this anniversary release, Rage Against the Machine – XX will be available as a CD in three configurations: 1) 20th Anniversary Edition Deluxe Box Set housing two CDs, two DVDs, one 12″ 180gm vinyl LP, one 40 page booklet and two-sided poster; 2) 20th Anniversary Special Edition featuring two CDs and a bonus DVD featuring six tracks in an oversized softpack and 3) 20th Anniversary Edition single compact disc (with three bonus tracks). 12″ 180gm vinyl editions–a picture disc and a facsimile reproduction–of the original LP, remastered (no bonus tracks) will also be available.
Compact Disc One of the newly remastered Rage Against the Machine – XX will include the original album, in its entirety, as well as three collectible b-sides from era.
Compact Disc Two presents the original Rage Against the Machine demo tape. Recorded in 1991 and sold for $5 at the merch table at early Rage shows, the tape achieved mythical word-of-mouth status amongst music fans while helping to seal the band’s deal with Epic Records. The 20th anniversary releases of Rage Against the Machine – XX marks the first time the entire RATM demo tapes have seen a full official release.
DVD #1 included in the Deluxe Box Set features Rage Against the Machine’s historic free concert in Finsbury Park on June 2010, performed as a thank-you to UK fans for making “Killing in the Name” the UK’s Number One Single during Christmas week 2009. Also included is the band’s ground-breaking music videos plus live concert performance clips.
DVD#2 takes you back to the release of Rage’s debut album focusing on live performance from 1991-1994 which features the full set of RATM’s first public performance as well as various live, rare clips.
Rage Against the Machine – XX will include new liner notes, penned especially for the band’s 20th anniversary by long-time fan and hip-hop pioneer Chuck D.

Tom Morello: Nightwatchman to join Bruce Springsteen at Hyde Park!
Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman confirmed to play UK on July 14th with
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman has joined the bill to play Hard Rock Calling in London’s Hyde Park on Saturday 14 July with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.
Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman has released 3 studio albums and one EP, and this summer marks his debut performance at Hard Rock Calling. Tom Morello joined Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band in 2008 in Anaheim, US collaborating on the ‘Ghost of Tom Joad’, which Rage Against the Machine have also covered. They reunited again last month on the first of Bruce Springsteen’s comeback dates in the US, joining up for a mind-blowing four-song set.
‘Save The Hammer For The Man‘ is from his latest album World Wide Rebel Songs on New West Records and the track was co-written with Ben Harper and features Harper on vocals and guitar. Check out the video below.
While Morello’s previous solo albums as The Nightwatchman have primarily been acoustic affairs, World Wide Rebel Songs, features a full electric band, “The Freedom Fighter Orchestra” (comprised of Dave Gibbs on bass, Carl Restivo on guitar and piano, Chris Joyner on keyboard, and Eric Gardner on drums) and they will be playing with Tom on 14 July in Hyde Park.
When describing World Wide Rebel Songs, Morello stated, “Troubled times call out for troubled songs. World Wide Rebel Songs is an album of rousing hopelessness and this time The Nightwatchman has brought along his electric guitar to tip the scales. I wanted to capture a vibe midway between Johnny Cash and Che Guevara, murder ballads and Molotov anthems.”

The song is available via iTunes and a portion of the proceeds will go to Childers’s charity, Angels of East Africa. Cornell has performed the song on The Late Show with David Letterman, PBS’s Tavis Smiley and Jimmy Kimmel Live!
You can watch the video in full below.
Chris Cornell has been heralded as one of the pioneers of the grunge era for writing a string of hits for Soundgarden, including the Grammy award-winning ‘Black Hole Sun’ and ‘Spoonman‘. In 1991, Chris formed Temple of the Dog, writing the classic song ‘Hunger Strike’ featuring a duet with Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder. In 2000, Cornell joined former Rage Against The Machine members (Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk) in Audioslave and wrote a series of the band’s hits including ‘Like A Stone’, ‘Be Yourself’ and ‘Doesn’t Remind Me’. Cornell’s career as a songwriter for film has included such songs as ‘Can’t Change Me’ and ‘Mission’, from the soundtrack to Mission Impossible II as well as hit theme song ‘You Know My Name’ for James Bond thriller Casino Royale, one of the most successful installments of the spy franchise to date. His songs have been recorded by diverse artists from Johnny Cash to Alice Cooper.
Tape on the brain….
Last week I got myself an iphone 4. Since then, in between playing Angry Birds and Flick Football, I have been busily spending an itunes voucher given to me for my last birthday. Those of you who have used one will know how quick and easy it is. In no time at all I had purchased umpteen albums old and new complete with artwork at the click of a button. It’s amazing how much things have changed in this respect.
In 1993 Rage Against The Machine released their debut album, along with the single ‘Killing In The Name Of’ – the Simon Cowell/Joe McElderry slaying anthem. Back in those days, I only listened to Nirvana, G’n’R, Soundgarden, Bowie, and The Who – anything else received the attention levels of a goldfish. That was until I was handed a dusty old TDK90 cassette held together with a bit of sellotape…
On it, was the aforementioned single and it the effect it had on me was huge. Now I know it’s not RATM’s best track, but at the time, aged 12 and with a neat & tidy, yet very dodgy haircut, that song altered my perception of music forever. I played it, pressed rewind, played it again, pressed rewind again, and so it went on. There was nothing else on the cassette – everything else had been recorded over with an indescribable noise – and so that cassette stayed in my Alba Walkman for weeks on end while my brand new ’In Utero’ cassette sat alone.
Eventually I was asked to record it for a school pal. I duly did so, and he recorded his copy on to yet another cassette for someone else, who in turn did the same for another wide-eyed kid. By now the track had been passed on via 6 different cassettes (my copy being the 3rd having already been copied twice) and the sound quality was nothing short of abysmal – 4 minutes of tinny, broken music with what sounded like a Fisher Price drum set and virtually no bass! It didn’t stop the kid who owned this copy from playing it as much as I played mine, and it too opened his eyes to a brave new world of music.
Fast-forward 18 years and a million tape cassette compilations (Oh, and the minidisc!) and we are in an age now where so much is done at the touch of a button in a nano-second. I think of myself as fortunate to have been a part of a time where copying a song, let alone an album, required precision, LOTS of patience, a dual tape deck and an old cassette. Long live rock!
