Still seemingly embracing his freedom from the confines of past incarceration… I mean, incarnation with Razorlight, Andy Burrows is not only now a full time member of We Are Scientists but is also preparing his new solo record, which is preceded by the first single ‘If I Had A Heart’.
Following in the same vein as his last venture, I Am Arrows, ‘If I Had A Heart’ is part indie cool and part 80s synth. The clinical beats of the verse spar nicely with Burrow’s slightly world weary vocal style before the bristling synth of the chorus kicks in channelling the spirit of the 80s; all that’s missing is the wind machine and shoulder pads.
Whilst musically upbeat, lyrically this is an apology delivered a little too late, ‘forget the lies, I told them out of spite’ and ‘If I had a heart, I would have let you go’ appear to be confessions of a guilty conscience.
‘If I Had A Heart’ continues to show that Andy Burrows can knock out a great, infectious pop tune with alarming ease. With collaborations also in the pipeline with the likes of Tom Smith (Editors) plus Mark ‘Midas Touch’ Ronson, this could well be that rare beast, a solo career from a drummer that has no comedy punch line.

Here is the video for the new Andy Burrows single….. really rather good!
Andy Burrows returns this summer with a new single, ‘If I Had A Heart’, on October 3rd via the new Distiller Singles Club label.
Burrows, the former Razorlight drummer and I Am Arrows solo, continues his adventures as a gifted and prolific writer and collaborator in multifarious projects with Mark Ronson, Tom Smith (Editors) and We Are Scientists. First, though, this glorious pop single under his own name. ‘If I Had A Heart’ was, like 2010s I Am Arrows album, ‘Sun Comes Up Again’, recorded with the producer Eliot James.
Andy Burrows will be celebrating the single release with a London show at Hoxton Underbelly, on Wednesday, September 21st. Tickets (£10) are on-sale now from www.spclive.co.uk/tickets.
As well as working on his own new solo album, of which ‘If I Had A Heart’ is the first taster, Andy Burrows has been busy doing a bunch of other exciting stuff:
Now a full time member of We Are Scientists, who he joined in 2009, Burrows is currently on tour in Asia with his bandmates, Chris Cain and Keith Murray. The trio have been writing songs for a new album, and plans are afoot for recording to begin this autumn.
Andy has been writing and recording with Mark Ronson on a number of different things, including the recent televised project with Guy Chambers. As well as writing and recording an album with Editors’ frontman Tom Smith, which they hope to release later this year.
